Nature’s Benefits in Kenya: An Atlas of Ecosystems and Human Well-Being

A new atlas of Kenya designed to improve understanding of the relationships between poverty and the environment was been launched. The atlas and its 96 different maps include significant policy and economic development analyses that will be useful to policy-makers worldwide.

SERVIR: A 21st Century System for Improved Environmental Decision Making in Mesoamerica

SERVIR is a regional visualization and monitoring system for Mesoamerica that integrates satellite and other geospatial data for improved scientific knowledge and decision making by managers, researchers, students, and the general public. SERVIR addresses the nine societal benefit areas of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS): disasters, ecosystems, biodiversity, weather, water, climate, oceans, health, agriculture, and energy. For example, SERVIR can be used to monitor and forecast ecological changes and severe events such as forest fires, red tides, and tropical storms.

Soil Atlas of Africa 

 

The Land Management and Natural Hazards Unit of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES), ISRIC – World Soil Information, the European Soil Bureau Network (ESBN), the African Soil Science Society (ASSS), and FAO conducted a survey amongst potential users of the Soils Atlas for Africa, to get insight into the needs and wishes about its content.  The preliminary report on the user survey for the Soil Atlas of Africa is now available for comment. Africa Environment Outlook 2 – Our Environment, Our Wealth (AEO-2)

Profiles Africa’s environmental resources as an asset for the region’s development.  The report underscores the need for sustainable livelihoods, and the importance of environmental initiatives in supporting them. Emphasis is put on what should and can be done with existing (remaining) environmental assets, in the context of identified constraints (issues), rather than focusing on what has been already lost.
