Acacia Conference: Networking Africa's Future -- Lessons
of Empowerment from Communities This conference is for
decision-makers concerned with information and communication
technologies (ICTs) in Africa's development. The event
marks the launch of the new Connectivity Africa programme
sponsored by Canada. Overall, proceedings deal with what
has been learnt during five years of research in Africa
in Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa and Uganda. Participants
will reflect on Acacia's major research publications -
to be launched at the conference - covering the effects
of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in
development. Five plenary theme sessions will interrogate
ICTs and poverty, education, access, policy and innovation.
After debate, the conference will propose an agenda for
continuing research and development.
- April 28-May 2, Jinja, Uganda "note postponement"
FRAME regretably
has needed to postpone the FRAME Contact Group Meeting
(April 28 and May 2, 2003, Jinja, Uganda). FRAME hopes
to be able to reschedule the Contact Group meeting later
in the year (perhaps November?) and would like to keep
the venue in Jinja.
The next meeting of the FRAME Contact Group to be held
April 28-May 2, 2003 in Jinja, Uganda. Please notify FRAME
of your interest in attending as soon as possible. The
theme for the 2003 meeting will be mainstreaming natural
resource management (NRM). The meeting will examine mainstreaming
NRM at three different levels: regional (e.g., NEPAD),
national (e.g., national development strategies with special
emphasis on poverty reduction strategies) and sector /
donor specific (e.g., USAID's agriculture, forestry and
water initiatives). It will also explore how FRAME and
the Contact Group, in particular, can enhance both the
mainstreaming of NRM and the development of specific communities
of practice to take the discussions started in Jinja forward
and expand them over the coming year. Please feel free
to comment on these themes by contacting both the FRAME
Senior Policy Advisor, Laurel Neme (e-mail: LaurelNeme@aol.com)
and Boubacar Thiam (email: bthiam.tdy@irgltd.com).
FRAME is an activity that facilitates the use of up-to-date
information by environment and natural resource management
professionals in Africa and encompasses: a web gateway
to analytical tools and information, mechanisms to share
lessons and experiences, a Contact Group and networks
of experts, and linkages to enhance collaboration among
partners. Funding for FRAME is provided by the United
States Agency for International Development (USAID) Africa
Office of Sustainable Development. For more information
about FRAME, visit http://www.frameweb.org/
