VITRI (Univ. of Helsinki), IUFRO-SPDC and ETFRN
In view of the overlapping objectives of both the GFIS Africa synthesis
initiative on rehabilitation of degraded lands in sub-Saharan Africa, and
the workshop on Trees, Agroforestry and Climate Change in Dryland Africa
(TACCDA), efforts are being combined for these two initiatives to be
conducted together for a greater impact in the sub-region. VITRI,
IUFRO-SPDC and ETFRN Coordinating Unit will integrate these activities,
pooling resources to organize an E-discussion (17 March - 25 April) and a
workshop in Nairobi, Kenya 2 - 7 June, 2003. ICRAF and KEFRI have kindly
agreed to co-host the workshop in Kenya. The final TACCDA workshop is
planned as a side event to the Tropical Savanna Conference, 15 - 20
September 2003 in Edinburgh, hosted by IIED, the main organiser
[ http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/bblza/sav2003/ ]. ETFRN will be providing the web
and E- discussion platform for TACCDA and the GFIS-Africa project of
IUFRO-SPDC. See for more information also the letter to participants from
Atse Yapi, IUFRO-SPDC Deputy Coordinator for Africa & FORNESSA Secretary:

Joint International Workshop of EARSeL Special Interest Group on Forest
Fires and the GOFC/GOLD-Fire Program
Innovative Concepts and Methods in Fire Danger Estimation
The basic activity of the Forest Fire Special Interest Group (FFSIG) is to
establish personal contacts among researchers interested in the application
of remote sensing and GIS technologies to forest fire research. One of the
goals of the GOFC/GOLD - Fire program is to improve communication between
satellite data providers, researchers and data users. Within this context,
this workshop will serve as a forum for discussion and for sharing ideas
and technical experience in this field of research. Special emphasis will
be devoted to new analysis techniques to improve the physical
interpretation of remote sensing images, and to the integration of
different sensors.

The first MapServer Users Meeting. Mapserver was one of the first
Internet-based image and mapserving engines developed for a project called
FORNET. FORNET was funded by NASA in the late 1980's to the University of
Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. It was
designed to serve forest inventory/compartment polygons overlayed on
Landsat Images with supporting scanned aerial photographs. The software
package is free. See: http://www.ra.dnr.state.mn.us/.
