Performing the EIS best practice case studies in Ghana
and Uganda - Ulrik

-The Ghana and Uganda best practice studies
were performed under different conditions and following slightly
different methodologies. Comparing these experiences leads
to some recommendations concerning the conducting of future
best practice studies.
The SADC Environmental Information Systems Training and Education Sub-programme (SETES) network, Phase II - Musisi Nkambwe - Despite a delay following the completion SETES Phase I, Phase II is beginning. The plans for this phase and the considerations which went into designing it are outlined.
Developing indicators for monitoring and reporting on the state of the environment in South Africa - Anna Ballance - A project to establish a core set of environmental indicators to monitor and report on the state of the environment is underway. These indicators will be used by South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

Global Environmental Information Portal: EarthTrends
- Dan Tunstall - A comprehensive
collection of information, including information on Africa,
and tools is being made available through the WRI's EarthTrends
Information Portal. EarthTrends includes information pertaining
to all countries in Africa.

renewable energy resource database for South Africa
- Jillian Muller
- A spatially referenced database on the potential
for deriving energy from renewable resources has recently
been developed to cover the whole of South Africa.
The
Desertification Information System/Environmental Information
System on the Internet (DIS/EISI) programme for 2001
- Christophe Nuttall - The
DIS/EISI can be seen as a tool for the management of environmental
information in support of the legal instruments relating to
the environment in Africa: desertification, biodiversity,
climate change, wetlands,
etc. GISWEB
Training Project - Christophe
Nuttall -OSS,
UNITAR and UNEP/GRID Geneva offer a training programme, with
data being available through the GisWeb tool, as a tangible
outcome. Users may access this data using only a web
browser.
Report
on the 5th Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI) Meeting
- Liz Gavin
- The 5th GSDI meeting, with the theme of "Sustainable
Development: GSDI for improved decision making" was held
in May 2001 in Colombia. Close on 300 people from 38 countries
participated in the meeting.
